The real world is rich, fascinating, and compelling. As teachers we nurture students' curiosity and encourage them to explore the world through reading and writing. To support this endeavor, San Juan Unified School District has worked with nationally recognized Accelerated Literacy Learning to develop four-day summer institutes drawing together administrators, coaches, and teachers. In this way, districts can build a community of educators to foster the growth and development of literacy at each school site. San Juan Unified School District has set schools on a course to provide rigorous, standards-based literacy instruction to help all students become authentic, 21st Century readers and writers.
Beginning Institute
Teachers, coaches, and administrators will spend half a day in one of three large group sections (Grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8). For the other half of the day, they will meet in small writing workshops. In the large group section, the work will center on the instructional core: planning, implementing, and launching the year in Writing Workshop. Participants will learn how to construct mini lessons, ways to confer with students about their writing, and how to assess student work to inform instruction. This focus has been shown to improve teaching practice, which in turn, increases student achievement. In the small writing workshop, participants will nourish their own writing lives in order to become better teachers of writing. They will generate ideas, write, and then share their writing in order to deepen their knowledge of the writing process.
Advanced Institutes
Our Advanced Institutes are for educators who have already begun their Writing Workshop journey and have foundational knowledge and experience with the structure and philosophy of Writing Workshop. Participants will have the opportunity to select from a menu of workshops geared towards their grade level (K-2, 3-5, and 6-8) to deepen their knowledge of Writing Workshop. Topics will include genre studies, conferring, revision, and unit design. National presenters including Carl Anderson, Barry Lane, Lester Laminack, and Heather Lattimer will share their expertise through keynote addresses and small group sessions.
We welcome all participants to join us to experience learning as a rewarding, fulfilling part of what it means to be an educator. A handout with additional information can be downloaded by clicking this link. Please share with your colleagues.
