A.L.L. Director, Susan Radley Brown, is working with students and teachers at River Oaks Elementary in Houston, Texas rolling out a Literary Non-Fiction Unit of Study.

This genre study helps students develop an understanding of how to analyze and write expository text. After students select and research a topic of interest, they determine how to present the information gathered in new and interesting ways, including Narrative or Poetry embedded with facts, ABC Books or Question and Answer Books.

On this particular day, the photos show Susan modeling how to reread her notebook while thinking aloud about how she selected her topic. The students are seen during the work-time rereading their notebooks and using post-it notes to mark possible topics.

At the end of the session, a few students share the topics they have chosen. Following the classroom visit, Susan and the teachers meet and debrief the lesson and then plan for the upcoming week and Susan’s next session.
